On May 22, in the middle of the night, the United States House of Representatives passed H.R.1 – the One Big Beautiful Ugly Bill Act. It’s now heading to the Senate under reconciliation, which means it can pass with a simple majority and no filibuster.
This bill is being sold as a package of tax cuts and incentives—but what it really does is consolidate wealth, punish the vulnerable, and dismantle critical public systems.
Here’s some of what it includes:
Medicaid cuts and work requirements that could strip millions of coverage
Tax breaks for the wealthy—including permanent extensions of Trump-era tax cuts
Temporary gimmicks like tax-free tips and overtime, masking long-term harm
Student loan rollbacks that increase costs for future generations
Environmental deregulation and expanded fossil fuel drilling
Massive spending on border enforcement and deportation infrastructure
And most dangerously—a provision that guts the courts’ power to hold government officials in contempt.
If passed, federal courts would lose the ability to enforce contempt citations for violations of restraining orders or injunctions—effectively removing one of the only tools courts have to stop constitutional violations.
As legal scholar Erwin Chemerinsky put it:
“Without the contempt power, judicial orders are meaningless and can be ignored.”
