Memes Don’t Build Movements. You Do.
Algorithms don’t build communities—you do. A minimalist playbook to start, signal, and sustain real work.
🔧 Torchlight Praxis — Tools you can carry
They want you to think reposting is enough. That rage is resistance. That scrolling is harmony. It’s not.
If your response to what’s happening in the world is limited to sharing news articles and memes on social media, I need you to hear this:
That is not resistance. It’s not activism. And it’s not helping.
Not really.
Outrage is not the same as action. Awareness is not the same as strategy.
Let's refuse to confuse the two.
They expect us to vent. To repost. To feel just informed and angry enough to think we’re doing something—while nothing actually changes. While the structures of control keep tightening around us.
If that sounds harsh, good. It’s supposed to.
If we want a free society and a future worth living in, we’re going to have to do more than feel bad about the present.
That doesn’t mean you need to hit the streets or start a nonprofit. But it does mean you need start doing something—no matter how small.
That might mean:
Organizing your neighborhood
Building a support network
Pulling your money out of predatory systems
Creating art and writing to celebrate freedom
Making phone calls and writing letters
Helping someone else stay grounded enough to keep going
Whatever it is, it needs to be more than hashtags and heartbreak.
Because memes don’t build movements. Algorithms don’t build communities.
You do.
🌱 Plant Your Tree
A decentralized info-to-action chain you can build today.
Step 1: Start Your Circle
Make a list of 5 trusted friends or contacts. Ask each of them to do the same.
Example:
Your list: Alex, Jordan, Priya, Ren, Marcus
Each of them makes their own list of 5
In two tiers, you’ve reached 30 people
In three tiers, you reach 125+
→ It’s not a “share”—it’s a signal.
Step 2: Choose One Issue
Pick a single, credible, clear issue to focus on each week—or month.
Example:
Ongoing censorship, curriculum restrictions, and political overreach in public education—especially related to race, gender, and book bans.
Step 3: Identify Key Letter Recipients
Pick 3 individuals or institutions with real power over the issue.
Monthly rotation idea:
Week 1: District Councilperson
Week 2: Superintendent or School Principal
Week 3: Nonprofit or Foundation Chair (e.g. education advocacy org)
Week 4: Local editorial board
You can reuse your message with slight edits and tailored subject lines.
Step 4: Write and Share Your Message

Subject: Public Education Demands Public Courage To: [Title + Name]
Dear [Title + Name],
I’m writing to ask that you issue a public statement addressing the unprecedented political interference in public education—both in our state and nationally.
Withholding federal funds, book bans, curriculum censorship, and ideological targeting of educators are not just “culture war” tactics. They are attacks on students, families, and communities.
As someone in a position of influence, your voice matters. I urge you to stand up for inclusive education, teacher autonomy, and the right to learn. I’ll be sharing this request with others in my community and watching closely for your public responses.
Silence, in this moment, is a statement in itself.
Respectfully,
[Your Name][City or District]
📌 Tips for Amplification
Encourage contacts to personalize the opening and closing
Include local facts if possible
Share publicly after sending—on a blog, in a group, on social media
Use a shared doc or group chat to track responses and follow-ups
Anonymize outcomes if needed
Reflect as a group and adapt the message monthly
🧭 Keep It Going
Host a monthly reflection call (online or in person). Talk about what worked, what didn’t, and what’s next.
Keep it simple. Keep it steady. This is how you turn momentum into movement.
